Dr. Wyatt's practice:

"Our practice consists of three offices in the northern Atlanta area. I have a total of 10 staff including two physicians, 5 medical assistants, a business manager/partner as well as a registered dietitian who all access patient charts. We deal with "walking-well" patients who are seeking weight loss, dietary, exercise and/or metabolism consultation. We see 95% adults."

Experience using other EHR systems:

"I have used Nextgen as well as PIVOT EMR systems in my previous work and when this business venture began, I wanted to find a system that could be customized to this particular type of practice, have low up-front costs, have easy set up, as well as a responsive support team. There are Bariatric (weight loss) specific EMRs on the market – costing between $7,500 and $25,000. But these were not internet based and we did not want to maintain a server nor take on the issues of patient data safety and maintaining this data."

"With Practice Fusion, the start-up costs were very reasonable (NONE!!) and the process to go "live" was quick and easy. I actually had downloaded Amazing Charts – and tried to use the free teaser portion and found that Practice Fusion was just as robust and even more customizable for my practice in particular."

Using Practice Fusion:

"Practice Fusion is used on a daily basis to enter office visit information: weights, vital signs, medication changes. Our patients come in weekly for weigh-ins and vitamin shots, which get documented in the immunization tab. I document medications that patients are taking as well as any medications that I prescribe here (we have an in-office pharmacy)."

"We also do screening blood work and EKGs on any patients requiring medication (and use the documentation module to keep these in the chart). Our dietitian makes her notes and is able to pull up the visit information and show progress to patients during her consultations. We also use the inter-office messaging to keep track of phone calls and messages between offices."

Benefits from using Practice Fusion:

"We have been able to offer our patients the option of scheduling visits at any of our locations now that we have central documentation. Before, with paper charts we were very limited and had to fax over whole charts for a visit – which was quite time intensive and frustrating. Now the information is always available and easily updated from any computer with internet access."

Practice Fusion's free support:

"The Practice Fusion tech support team has been great. I really like the ability to send suggestions or bugs to their attention. I immediately get a response that a ticket was made and within a few hours to a day – I get a call or an email with a resolution or an update as to my concerns or suggestions. So far, I am VERY impressed by their promptness and attention to detail."

Challenges of a multi-facility practice:

"We had the issue of patients needing to go in between offices and their charts not being accessible except by fax. Now all our charts as well as notes, medications, phone messages, and schedules are available though Practice Fusion at any location. We have had great feedback from patients. In addition, Practice Fusion helped with our ability to train new employees and establish a standard protocol for all the offices."

Other systems Dr. Wyatt uses:

"I am very excited to see Quest Diagnostics integration into Practice Fusion and I am waiting patiently for LabCorp to follow suit. I use Epocrates for information on medications as well as drug interactions. I recommend EMR integration for security, legibility of patient charts as well as prescription writing and the inevitable progression into the digital age of medicine - which is here already!"
